Straight answers about planning a South African trip with SafariSmith: hunting, fishing, golf, wildlife, Cape Town and the Winelands, and how our quotes work.
About SafariSmith
What is SafariSmith?
+
SafariSmith is a U.S.-facing Safari Adventure Agent that helps Americans plan and book complete, tailor-made South African adventure safaris with transparent pricing, trusted South African relationships, and full concierge support.
Who is SafariSmith for?
+
SafariSmith is for travelers who want Africa to be built around their main reason for going. Hunting, wine, golf, fishing, photography, wildlife, Cape Town, family travel, or another priority can become the centerpiece, with the rest of the journey designed around the people traveling.
Can I combine hunting, golf, fishing, wine, and Cape Town in one South Africa trip?
+
Yes. SafariSmith is designed to connect multiple South African experiences into one tailored itinerary, coordinating the relevant specialists, properties, transfers, and activities so the trip feels like one journey instead of separate bookings.
Do I need to be a hunter to plan a trip with SafariSmith?
+
No. Hunting is SafariSmith's founding experience, but it is not a requirement. SafariSmith also develops trips around Cape Town, the Winelands, golf, fishing, wildlife, photography, family travel, and other South African experiences.
How much does a SafariSmith trip cost?
+
SafariSmith trips are custom-quoted because price depends on trip length, group size, accommodations, activities, hunting species where applicable, transportation, and pace. The SafariSmith quoting standard is dated, versioned, line-item pricing with clear inclusions and exclusions.
How does SafariSmith choose suppliers and partners?
+
SafariSmith tracks suppliers through a verification process that can include research, direct contact, commercial verification, and firsthand experience or site visits. Verification depth varies by supplier, and SafariSmith does not treat a web listing as the same thing as a verified relationship.
Can SafariSmith plan for non-hunting companions and families?
+
Yes. SafariSmith designs around the whole group. Spouses, children, grandparents, and non-hunting companions can have their own interests and daily activities built into the itinerary rather than being treated as secondary travelers.
What makes SafariSmith different?
+
SafariSmith combines transparent, explainable pricing with a U.S.-and-South-Africa planning perspective, selective local relationships, deliberate trip pacing, and one connected itinerary. The goal is to make a complex African journey easier to understand, compare, and book.
Hunting
Go to HuntingWho runs the hunt?
+
The hunt is run by Andri Fox Safaris, SafariSmith's founding hunting partner, with licensed professional hunters leading every day in the field. SafariSmith plans the wider trip, handles the logistics and builds your itemized quote. We never act as the professional hunter.
What is included in the daily hunting rate, and what is extra?
+
The daily rate covers your professional hunter, standard camp accommodation, meals during the hunt and day-to-day hunting support. Trophy fees, gratuities, taxidermy, shipping, ammunition, specialty services and any extra travel or transfers are separate, and each appears as its own line on your quote. A wounded animal counts as taken, and its full trophy fee applies.
Can non-hunters come along?
+
Yes. Spouses, family and friends can join as non-hunting observers at camp and in the field, or spend days of their own in Addo, on the Kenton-on-Sea coast or in Cape Town and the Winelands. Observer days are priced separately from hunting days.
Can I bring my own rifle?
+
Yes. Bringing a firearm into South Africa requires a temporary import permit, and we walk you through the paperwork and airline rules well before you travel. If you'd rather not travel with a firearm, rifle rental can be arranged with the outfitter and is quoted as its own line.
How do deposits and payments work?
+
A 50% deposit confirms your booking and reserves the dates, and the balance is due 30 days before you arrive. Trophy fees are settled for the animals actually taken. Payment is by wire transfer or another agreed method, and the full terms come with your written quote before you pay anything.
Fishing
Go to FishingCan I add fishing to a South African hunting safari?
+
Yes. That is what the Kenton-on-Sea packages are built for. Most guests add two to four days on the coast before or after an Eastern Cape hunt with Andri Fox Safaris, and SafariSmith plans the transfer between the hunting area and the coast so it runs as one trip with one itemized quote.
Where is Kenton-on-Sea?
+
Kenton-on-Sea is a small coastal town on South Africa's Eastern Cape coast, between Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and Port Alfred, where the Bushmans and Kariega rivers meet the Indian Ocean. Guests usually fly into Gqeberha and travel to the coast by road.
How much fishing time do I actually get?
+
A planned offshore session runs about 5–6 hours dock to dock, usually launching around 6:00–6:30 AM and returning around 11:30 AM–12:30 PM. Allowing for the run out and back, that is roughly 4–5 hours of actual fishing. The skipper sets the exact times on the day based on the weather, tides, sea and target species.
What happens if the sea is too rough to launch?
+
Offshore fishing sessions are weather permitting. Launch time, duration, fishing location and the decision whether to launch remain subject to the skipper's judgment based on weather, tides, sea conditions and safety. If the ocean isn't suitable, we move to estuary or river fishing, boating, the beach or another local experience. Anything that carries an extra cost is offered as an optional upgrade and priced before you agree to it.
What will we catch?
+
That depends on the season, the sea and where the skipper takes the boat that morning. We'll tell you the likely target species for your dates when we quote. No catch, species or number of fish is ever guaranteed. You're paying for the time on the water, the boat, the gear and the know-how.
How much does a Kenton-on-Sea fishing package cost?
+
Each package is priced for the number of guests, so the cost per person comes down as the group grows. Every package covers the lodge, meals, the boat, tackle and bait, and appears as its own line on a dated SafariSmith quote in US dollars, alongside any hunt or other parts of your trip.
Can we book just one day of fishing?
+
We don't normally sell a single fishing day. Getting to the coast takes time, and one day leaves nothing in hand if the wind picks up. Two days and one night is the minimum, and most guests choose three days.
Can non-anglers come along?
+
Yes. Partners and family can stay at the lodge and spend the mornings on the beach, the river or the coast while the anglers are offshore. Tell us who is fishing and who isn't, and we'll show each person's cost on the quote.
What about groups of more than four?
+
The published rates cover one to four guests. Larger groups can often be accommodated using additional boats and houses, but every group above four is a custom package that our fishing partner confirms before we quote.
Golf
Go to GolfWhat is a golf safari?
+
A golf safari pairs rounds of golf with game drives from a safari lodge in the same trip. In South Africa that usually means the Kruger region, where courses such as Leopard Creek and Skukuza Golf Club sit beside or inside wildlife country, or the Garden Route, where coastal courses sit near private game reserves.
Can I combine golf and hunting in one South Africa trip?
+
Yes. SafariSmith can add golf before or after an Eastern Cape hunt, or alongside Cape Town, the Winelands, fishing or a wildlife safari, and keep it all in one itinerary and one itemized quote. On the Eastern Cape coast, links golf at St Francis Bay is the easiest pairing with a hunt.
Are wild animals really on the course? Is it safe?
+
On Kruger-region bush courses, yes. Lions, elephants, hippos and hyenas can and do appear. Each course has its own local rules and staff guidance for wildlife, and you play by them. On the coast it's more often springbok on the fairway. Sightings are never guaranteed.
Can non-golfers come along?
+
Yes. Partners and family can spend the golf hours on game drives, at the lodge spa, in the Winelands, in Cape Town or on the coast. We plan their days as carefully as the rounds.
Who runs the golf?
+
Our golf partners, Golf Master and Kruger Golf Safaris, arrange the tee times, courses and golf logistics. SafariSmith designs the wider trip, connects it to anything else you're doing in South Africa, and shows every cost on one quote.
Do I need to bring my own clubs?
+
You can bring them or hire on site where the course offers it. Club hire, caddies and carts vary by course, so we confirm them in writing for each round before you travel.
Do I need malaria precautions for a Kruger golf safari?
+
Kruger is a low-risk malaria area, with the highest risk in the wetter months, roughly October to April. Speak to your doctor or a travel clinic before you go. Golf on the Garden Route, the Eastern Cape coast and in the Cape is outside the malaria areas.
How much does a golf trip cost?
+
Golf trips are quoted for your dates. Green fees, lodges, game drives and transfers each appear as their own line on a dated SafariSmith quote, with inclusions and exclusions spelled out, including items such as course transfers and conservation levies that are easy to miss.
Wildlife & safari
Go to Wildlife & safariWhere can I see the Big Five in South Africa?
+
The two areas we plan around are the Eastern Cape, home to Addo Elephant National Park and several private Big Five reserves, and the Greater Kruger in the northeast. The Eastern Cape fits easily with a hunt or Kenton-on-Sea fishing. Kruger is its own leg of the trip, usually reached by flying into Skukuza.
Is the Eastern Cape malaria-free?
+
Addo and the Eastern Cape's game reserves are outside South Africa's malaria areas, which is one reason families often choose them. Kruger is a low-risk malaria area, with the highest risk in the wetter months, roughly October to April. Always take medical advice from your doctor or a travel clinic before you travel.
Addo or Kruger: which should I choose?
+
If you're already hunting or fishing in the Eastern Cape, Addo or a private reserve near the coast adds wildlife without another flight, and it's malaria-free. If the safari is the main event, or you're pairing it with Cape Town or a golf safari, the Greater Kruger's size and private lodges are hard to beat. We'll lay out both for your dates.
How far is Addo from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth)?
+
SANParks puts Addo Elephant National Park about 30 minutes' drive from Gqeberha and its airport, which makes it an easy last stop before a flight home.
Can I add a wildlife safari to a hunting trip?
+
Yes. It's one of the most common additions. Non-hunters can spend a day in Addo during the hunt, or the whole group can finish with a night or two of game viewing before flying out of Gqeberha. We plan the transfers so it runs as one trip.
Are wildlife sightings guaranteed?
+
No. These are wild animals in large, open areas, and no honest operator can promise a particular sighting. Guided drives with an experienced ranger give you the best chance, and more time in the bush gives you more chances.
Self-drive or guided?
+
Addo allows both self-drive game viewing and guided game drives. Private reserves are guided, in open vehicles with a ranger. For a first safari, or for photographers who want to be positioned well, we usually recommend guided drives.
Is a safari suitable for children?
+
Often, yes, and the malaria-free Eastern Cape makes it easier. Some lodges set minimum ages for game drives or offer family vehicles and kids' activities. We check those rules for each lodge before we suggest it.
What does a wildlife safari cost?
+
Wildlife legs are quoted for your dates. The lodge, game drives, park conservation fees and transfers each appear as their own line on a dated SafariSmith quote, so you can see exactly what you're paying for.
Cape Town & the Winelands
Go to Cape Town & the WinelandsHow many days do I need for Cape Town and the Winelands?
+
We usually suggest at least five or six nights, split between Cape Town and a Winelands base such as Franschhoek or Stellenbosch, so neither feels rushed. Our sample Couples' Cape Escape runs ten days across Cape Town, Franschhoek and the V&A Waterfront.
Who plans the Cape Town and Winelands part of the trip?
+
Elke Swart, SafariSmith's Cape Town lead, chooses the stays, restaurants, estates and experiences, and visits suppliers in person. SafariSmith then builds them into one itinerary and one itemized quote.
Can I combine Cape Town with a hunt or a safari?
+
Yes. Many guests start or finish in the Cape and fly on to the Eastern Cape for a hunt, Kenton-on-Sea fishing or Addo, or north to the Greater Kruger for a wildlife or golf safari. We plan the flights and transfers so it runs as one trip.
Do we need to rent a car for the Winelands?
+
No. We plan driver-led days and private transfers between Cape Town, the wine estates and your stays, so nobody has to drive after a tasting. Each transfer appears as its own line on your quote.
How much does a Cape Town and Winelands trip cost?
+
It depends on your dates, stays and experiences, so every trip is quoted individually. Your SafariSmith quote is dated and itemized, with accommodation, experiences, meals and transfers shown separately and inclusions spelled out.
