Jan Nel IV

Founder & Trip Architect

United States / South Africa

Jan Nel IV is the Founder & Trip Architect at SafariSmith, where he helps turn the complexity of planning a South African journey into a clear, personalized experience for U.S. and international travelers.

Raised in the United States with deep family roots in South Africa, Jan has spent much of his life moving between the two countries and developing a firsthand understanding of the hunting, hospitality, landscapes and local relationships that shape an exceptional African trip. That perspective is central to SafariSmith's role as a bridge between travelers abroad and trusted specialists on the ground in South Africa.

At SafariSmith, Jan leads the client relationship, trip design, pricing clarity and the systems that connect hunting, Cape Town, the Winelands, fishing, golf, wildlife and other experiences into one coherent journey. His focus is on understanding what each traveler actually wants, coordinating the right partners and making every recommendation and quote easier to understand.

Jan is not a professional hunter. His role is to make sure the right experts are brought into the right parts of the trip, while giving SafariSmith travelers one consistent point of contact and the confidence that the journey has been thoughtfully designed from the first conversation onward.

Elke Swart is SafariSmith's Cape Town & Winelands Experience Consultant, where she develops supplier relationships, destination knowledge and practical experience inputs for thoughtfully designed journeys.

With a particular focus on Cape Town and the Winelands, Elke works closely with local accommodation providers, private guides, transport partners, wine estates, activity specialists and culinary experiences to build a trusted network of exceptional suppliers. Her approach combines detailed destination research with a strong understanding of what makes a journey feel seamless, authentic and genuinely memorable.

At SafariSmith, Elke is focused on creating experiences that go beyond simply seeing a destination. From private wine-country days and exceptional dining to cultural discoveries, outdoor adventures and carefully selected stays, she helps ensure every element has a purpose and contributes to the traveler's overall experience.

Her goal is simple: to showcase South Africa at its very best, while giving SafariSmith travelers the confidence that every detail has been thoughtfully considered before they arrive.

Why SafariSmith exists

The trip should be easier to understand than the industry around it.

African travel can involve outfitters, hotels, drivers, flights, trophy handling, wine estates, golf courses, fishing operators and family members who all want different things. SafariSmith's job is to turn that complexity into one understandable plan.

We use technology internally to move faster and reduce errors, but the client-facing standard stays human: a conversation, a tailored itinerary, a clear quote and a defined next step.

Our operating standard

Clarity before complexity.

01

Listen first

Species, dates and budget matter. So do pace, spouse interests, food, comfort, fears and how your group wants to travel.

02

Verify

We document the partners, rates, terms and operational details behind the recommendation.

03

Explain

Quotes are intended to be dated, line-item and understandable—not a mystery total.

04

Own the handoff

The hunting, Cape, wine, fishing, golf and travel pieces should connect instead of leaving the client to coordinate them alone.

Start with a conversation.

Tell us who is traveling and what you want from South Africa. We'll build from there.
